Abstract:An attempt to assess the meaning and short-term implications of the more recent (since June 1974) developments in the gold situation, firstly in an international context, and secondly for the South African economy. Sections: Recent gold developments in an international context E; (retaining gold as the basis of the system; early demonetization of gold; a 'floating official price of gold) - Recent effects on the South African economy (net gold output; contribution of gold mining to gross domestic product; government revenue from gold mining) - Contrast between economic situation in South Africa and in most other countries (real rate of economic growth; business cycle situation; balance of payments; strengthened position of South African economy).
