Abstract:One of the most famous slave armies is the 'Abid al-Bukhari. It played an important role in the 18th century in consolidating the 'Alawi Dynasty, which still rules Morocco today. This paper deals with one but important problem in the army's history: the origin of the 'Abid al-Bukhari, wether the soldiers were native Moroccans or wether they came or were brought to Morocco from the Western Sudan. For more than three centuries scholars have held that the 'Abid were Sudanese captives or refugees, but this paper shows that nearly all 'Abid were Moroccan-born. Notes.
