| Abstract: | This paper, after a brief treatment of mercenary incursions into Africa, concentrates on their role in the liberation war in Southern Africa. It analyzes the circumstances which favoured their past activities in African wars, and shows the presence of the same factors in the on-going liberation was particulary in Zimbabwe. It looks into the strategy of the minority regimes in Southern Africa to see how the use of mercenaries fits into it. Finally, it looks into some ways African states could contain the activities of mercenaries on the continent. Notes. |
