Abstract: | The central role of surveys in social science research has long been recognized. However, although the survey literature distinguishes between cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, most surveys in South Africa are based on cross-sectional designs. Yet longitudinal research has several important advantages. Although it is more complex to design, the relative advantages of this research approach outweigh the advantages of other designs. Two key areas in which longitudinal research could provide valuable data, with enormous potential policy spinoff in the field of welfare, are household studies and work and career patterns.
