Abstract: | The aim of this article is simply to offer an outline chronicle, and preliminary periodisation, concerning the interaction of private and public finance on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt. For the history of large-scale copper mining in Northern Rhodesia five periods are discerned: 1) 1924-1929: Initial development and capital formation; 2) 1929-1939: World depression; rearmament; 3) 1939-1949: World War II and aftermath; 4) 1949-1956: Boom: sterling devaluation and US stockpiling; 5) 1956-1964: Price fluctuation; diversification of mining investment.
