Abstract:Zambia ranks third in the world behind the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. in copper production. The productivity record of Zambian mining is crucial in estimating the growth prospects for the Zambian economy. As the copper industry faces one of the most unstable markets, an analysis of the Zambian copper industry may give some indication of the effects that unstable demand and price conditions have on primary producers. After an introduction the growth of Zambian metal production and labour productivity (the initial data to be analysed) are briefly reviewed. Then the methodology is outlined and the quality and relevance of the available data are discussed. A detailed productivity analysis is carried out and the sources of the observed technical change are discussed. Ref., notes, tables.
