Abstract: | The first copper mines to be pegged in Northern Rhodesia were in the Hook of the Kafue and were ancient workings rediscovered by Frank Lewis in 1898. Orlando Barangwanath, who is still alive in South Africa, was partner to Lewis. A book 'Trail of the Copper King' by T.V. Bulpin, published by Howard Timmins in 1959 tells the story of Barangwanath's life. The present article gives Barangwanath's own reminiscences: 'These notes are made entirely from memory, but my memory at eighty-nine is fairly reliable. Mr. Bulpin's 'Trail of the Copper King', is not quite reliable, as the dialogue is entirely his, and even some of the incidents, but it is certainly more readable'. Photos. |
