| Abstract: | This paper presents a study of the role of Islam and Islamic civilization as a factor in the emergence of Arabic theater. The role of Islam is very controversial; in fact, much debate has arisen on why Muslims did not produce any theatrical art before the nineteenth century. Scholars researching the subject have reached very different conclusions, only a few of which are relevant to this paper. The rudimentary theatrical art of Islam took several different forms: ta'azi, orta oiunu, qaraquz, and khayal al-zill. Modern theater has emerged in several Islamic countries: in Lebanon in 1847, in Turkey in 1856, in Iran in 1869, and in Egypt in 1870. Notes. |
