Abstract: | Experience in Botswana has shown that popular theatre can play an important role in community education, expanding participation and providing a mirror for critical analysis and a catalyst for discussion and action. Without care its power as spectacle can overwhelm its usefulness as a tool for education and action. There is also a need; for fresh ways of working with communities in order to produce a truer representation of the situation in communities and not merely a reflection of the concerns and interests of the dominant class. Only when these problems are resolved will popular theatre become an effective conscientizing force and make a real contribution to progressive social change. Bibliogr., notes. |
