Abstract:The black American educational component in the African response to colonialism in South Africa during the turn-of-the-century era was effective as a mean of protest in several ways; 1) it promoted African independence; 2) it fostered self-reliance and helped remove subservience through race-pride. This paper stares with making reference to an article by Terence Ranger on African efforts at controlling their education in five key Bast and Central African societies (Past and Present, 32 (December. 1965), p. 57-85), followed by the sections: The significance of Booker T. Washington - African contact with Black American educational ideas and practices - Other points of African contact with Black American education - Assessment. Notes.
