Abstract: | The author concentrates on some aspects of rural development which are often neglected. These are those areas which are usually lumped under the heading 'social' or, perhaps, 'socio-psychological', as distinct from economic or political. In order to do this, he presents in summary from four case studies for consideration, having rather unique characteristics, which - when taken as an ensemble - allow to draw certain preliminary conclusions concerning the importance of the 'social' aspects of rural development. Sections: Introduction - Rural development in Tanzania - The case studies (I. Pastoralism and the 'Masai problem', 2. Female suicide in Tanga Region, 3. Witchcraft and underdevelopment, 4. Basic personality versus class struggle in Ismani) - Conclusion. Notes, French summary. |
