Abstract: | Blyden was born in 1832. He spent most of his life in West Africa (Liberia and Sierra Leone) and died in 1912. The first part consists of a biographical sketch, the second part describes his social and political ideas. Important themes in Blyden's social thoughts are polygamy, communal effort, religious practice, judicial practice and secret societies. Important themes in his political thoughts are political independence, the role of education in the task of nation-building and the idea of a West African Federation. Notes, ref. |
