Abstract: | This paper aims at raising questions rather than settling issues and above all to stress that the historian, whether chronicler or traditions keeper, is himself an actor on the historical scene and not a simple recorder of events. The way in which he acts can vary. The author has sought to suggest that in regard to the few works surveyed here the literacy of the chronicler or his confession of Islam alone does not differentiate his approach to history radically from that of the keeper or oral tradition. - Notes. |
