| Abstract: | Purpose in this paper is firstly to identify some sources of confusion in the analysis of contemporary family structures; secondly to clarify the empirical evidence relating to the structure of small communities and to the validity or otherwise of particular descriptive stereotypes of the 'family'; and thirdly to suggest the possibility of transcending the dualism characteristic of some previous approaches to the study of family life in the labour reserves. Sections: Changing perspectives on migrant labour - What does a rural community look like? - The extended family and the nuclear family - The agnatic family, the kindred and the house-property complex - Conclusion: a brief illustration of method.
