Abstract:An account of Cecil Rhodes' first year in Africa, from 1 September 1870 when he landed in Durban until October 1871 when he left the cotton farm begun by his brother in the Umkomaas Valley to join him in the diamond diggings. Rhodes' previous biographers have slighted this pre-diamond interlude and its importance in forming Rhodes, who 'came to Umkomaas a youth; (and) ... left a young adult, ready for larger things.'
