Abstract:During his visit to Sinnar in 1773 AD the Scottish explorer James Bruce of Kinnaird was befriended by one of the high court officials of the kingdom, the sid alqua Ahmad. As an outcome of this relationship Bruce obtained a brief written account of the Funj kings. This document, now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, is the earliest record of the Funj kings known to the present authors. Through this article it is made readily available both to those who may profit from the nuances of the original script (Plates 1-6) and those whose needs are best served by an English translation. Notes, plates.
