Abstract: | Reindorf (1834-1917), a Ghanaian and amateur historian who practised history writing largely for patriotic reasons, was the author of 'The History of the Gold Coast and Asante' (1895), a classic which has established his reputation as one of the pioneers of modern West African historiography. The present author critically evaluates Reindorf's contributions to the development of modern West African historiography, describing Reindorf's own perception of the nature and purpose of history, his object in writing, his methodology, framework of study and the African perspective of history, as well as deficiencies in his work.
