Abstract: | Aim is to examine the reciprocal relationship which existed between the French West African Archives in Dakar on the one hand and the evolution of African historical research on the other. In regard to the establishment and maintenance of the French West African Archives, the cultural aims of the Government General of Afrique Occidentale Francaise and of the Senegalese Republic have in turn been affected by the concerns of historians working in Africa. The changing perception of African history, the gradual evolution of French bureaucracy in the colony, and the independence of Senegal have all had a direct effect on the organization, the contents and the administration of the archives. Sections: French African archives prior to 1911 - The foundation of the AOF archives - The archives and oral tradition - The revival of interest in African history - The Archives nationales and the Archives culturelles - Conclusion. Notes, sum. (also in French). |
