Abstract: | This article sets out the reasons for the passing of the South African Factories Act and its amendments, and assesses the effectiveness in terms of the aims, hopes and needs of the different groups affected. Possible reasons for changes and developments in the legislation are also put forward. Sections: forces behind the act - hours of work - rest break - conditions of work - women and children - colour bias of the act - accidents - compliance and enforcement - coverage of the act. |
