| Abstract: | This paper is concerned with labour migration to South Africa from the BLS countries and the social and economic consequences of migration for the sending countries. It explains changes in the numbers who have migrated from time to time and relates migration to South Africa to developments that are internal to the countries of origin. The author argues that attempts to increase farm incomes in the BLS countries will not necessarily stem the flow of migration. Sections of the article: Introduction - Historical background - Migrant labour - Circular migration - The extent of migration - Cost and benefits of migration - Effects on agriculture - Return flows - Conclusion: economic dependence.
