Abstract:Lesotho has experienced a very rapid growth of incomes in the 1970s; and yet the country's economic prospects have never been bleaker. This paper analyses the recent developments in Basotho labourmigration and the scope for policy intervention. It argues that a serious attempt must be made to develop the local economy in Lesotho and proposes a strategy for survival based on broadly diffused agricultural development, promotion of domestic protected manufacture of basic needs products and the use of more appropriate technologies in both agriculture and industry.
