Abstract: | A small group of French intellectuals, briefly united in 1954-1955 as the 'Committee of Seventy-Five', played a pivotal role in the decolonisation of Morocco. Their call for a return to the original guarantees which were embodied in the Treaty of Fez (1912) and which were flagrantly violated by the ensuing French administrations particularly by the repressive policies of Marshall Alphonse Juin, coincided with the crystallised shift of Moroccan Nationalism from reformist to separatist. This coincidence and the terrorist nature of right-wing French response to the Committee established the group and its action as a positive force for Moroccan independence in spite of its collective modest, nonseparatist character.
