Abstract: | This paper is concerned with the question of explanation in history with some reference to the history of Africa. The first part of the paper gives a brief account of the nature of explanation in history, with particular emphasis on the Popper-Hempel model and the reactions of philosophers and historians, which can be seen as part of a large debate related to the question of the role of generalisations and fact in historical reconstruction. In the second part, the formalist model is examined. The author offers a critique of the model, which portrays some of the features of the Popper-Hempel model, and brings a new aspect of methodology to the fore, linking history and philosophy. Notes. |
