Abstract:The Middle River people of the Gwembe Valley of Zambia have, even before resettlement, been unable to accumulate the kind of property and productivity necessary to support durable local in situations with fixed roots and a past. There are natural, physical and social conditions which produce an amorphous society lacking any organization of firm, bounded local units. The people have had only their durable general rules of behavior which they seek to apply in various situations. For the Gwembe Tonga of the Middle River a horizontal spreading of mixed ties over a wide social field has been particularly important. Instituted groups being absent, men must continually work with and test the basics of social life, their interpersonal relations. The drives and ambitions that lead men to build up their communities assure that there will be conflict and disruption. References.
