Abstract: | This study compares witchcraft incidents and beliefs among the Temne in three communities in Sierra Leone: in Lunsar, a modern town of over 10,000 people which has grown up near an open-cast iron-ore mine; in the surrounding hamlets which are basically agricultural and traditional in outlook though many unskilled mine workers live there; and in and around Rokupr, a large village and trading centre in the heart of rice-growing country about forty miles north-west of Lunsar.
