| Abstract: | This is a series of articles on the place of culture in the life of the masses of the (peasant) people in socialist Tanzania: I. B. Flou, 'Introduction - the strategy of folk research', deals with local-level museums as tools to help the rural masses of Tanzania to isolate those elements in their traditional culture and society which are central for the development of an African peasant socialism; 2. G.D. Pedersen, 'Traditional Sukuma curers: the Bafamu', deals with the traditional magician in the Sukuma society, the Nfumu (pl. Bafumu). The Nfumu, mediator between the people and a system of various spirits, is specialized in solving different types of human problems; 3. B.R. Knudsen 'Dance societies: the voluntary work-association of Sukuma', deals with traditional secret societies which in the passing of time became voluntary working association for mutual assistance in cultivation through labour exchange; 4. D. Clements, 'The Research Committee at Bujora' deals with the origin and activities of an institution aiming at promoting cultural and social life among the Sukuma. Ref. |
