Abstract:Western Somali resistance to colonialism has been amongst the fiercest, just as their colonial experience has been - and remains - probably the most brutal on the African continent. The people of Western Somalia are subjected to political suppression, economic exploitation, and social degradation. From the colonial point of view these policies have been and still are aimed at breaking the will of the Somali people, to assimilate or displace them and in the long run to turn the colonized areas into integral parts of 'Ethiopia proper'. Even so, these same colonial policies have made the Somalia even more aware of their identity; their political consciousness has strengthened their will to survive all the colonial evils. Note, tab.
