| Abstract: | The Lumpa Church owes its creation to Alice Lenshine Mulenga and her disciples. It is among the strongest and most active churches of Northern Rhodes, with responsible, contributing members, a devoted clergy, and a self-regenerating sense of martyrdom. Its congregations have drawn Africans in large numbers from the ranks of orthodox mission churches, and the new church has come to pose a substantial threat to the continuation of certain mission stations. The center of the Lenshine movement is the Chinsali District of Northern Rhodesia. This article discusses the Lenshina movement (the Lumpa Church) as a social, religious and nationalist phenomenon. It deals with the movement's origins and growth, with the church's secular rôle, and with the personality and figure of Alice Lenshina herself. Bibliography. |
