Abstract: | The Preferential Trade Area of the Eastern and Southern African states (PTA), which became operational in July 1984, covers the following countries: Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Somalia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It aims at eliminating all trade barriers among member states. A survey is given of PTA institutions and of co-operation in customs and trade matters, as well as in the fields of transport and communications, industrial and agricultural development, standardization and quality control. P. 13-16 contain 1983 country statistics on population, GNP, inflation, production, trade, public debt, and labour force, and on exchange rates during the years 1983-85. Notes. |
