Abstract:This paper, an attempt on the part of a non-economist to examine closely from a polite-al viewpoint some major economic decisions taken by member states of an economic union, (i.e. an attempt to examine critically the political implications of the Lagos Treaty (May 28, 1975) which gave birth to the Economic Community of West African States (23 June, 1975), first uses some of the materials on and experiences of regional economic integration in other parts of the world to illustrate problems and possibilities in West Africa; secondly, and as a corollary of the first, highlights and assesses some of the main issues likely to create conflicts among the member states of ECOWAS; and thirdly, by analysing past trends, attempts some few recommendations. Notes, summaries in German and French.
