Abstract:The forest products trade of West Africa has had a strong external orientation, with intraregional trade accounting for less than one percent of the total annual volume of regional forest products trade. The author identifies and discusses the major constraints to the development of intraregional trade within the sixteen member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). They include the limited forest resource base, relatively low demand for wood due to low incomes and high prices, undeveloped forest industries and generally weak infrastructure, limited market information and marketing arrangements, import restrictions, payment difficulties, external links, and lack of political will. The need for cooperation among West African countries for harmonization of their forest policies is stressed, and recommendations made on policies at the national and subregional levels for improvement of the intraregional forest products trade.
