Abstract:The relations between the two western-aligned resources giants of the southern hemisphere. South Africa and Australia, are liable to the political attitudes of their governments. The imponderables of the South African political situation are well known. At the other side, Australian politics are also far from being as simple as they might seem. One is after all dealing with a country where the conservatives are called Liberals, where the only really sectional party is called the Nationals, where the Australian Labor Party is in fact a true if bitterly vexed coalition and the Coalition is not, and where the dominant and vengeful rightwing faction in the Australian Labor Party is known as the Center Unity Group. A historical survey of the relations between Pretoria and Canberra underlines the inconstancy in the relations between South Africa and Australia. Australia's former Liberal Prime Minister's attitude towards South Africa was one of unkindness. The arrival of Labor Prime Minister Robert J. Hawke brings no prospects of improvement in the relations between Pretoria and Canberra. Ref.
