Abstract: | During the period 1860 to 1914, a regional social formation was forged in southern Africa on the anvil of capitalist penetration of African societies. This paper examines the early years of the regional formation and the varied metamorphosis which reduced African societies to a state of destitution and acute dependence within a generation. In the first two sections, the need for dispensing with regional generalizations about the southern African experience in the world-economy is argued on both theoretical and historical grounds. The variant experiences of particular African societies (especially Basotho and Swazi are then reviewed with reference to the origins of migrant labour and agricultural commodity production, and the development of labour-reserves.
