Abstract:Regional integration in Africa has neither effectively confronted nor replaced integration in the global political economy. It has rather tended to reinforce inherited inequalities on the continent. This essay identifies issues and interactions within the nexus of regional integration and imperialism by examining the roles of Kenya and South Africa in eastern and Southern Africa respectively. The motivation is a concern to analyze the phenomenon of sub-imperialism in Africa in the context of both internal and international, regional an global inequalities. Sections: internal and international inequalities in Africa: introduction - sub-imperialism: the cases of Kenya and South Africa - limits on regional hegemony - dependence and discontinuities: conclusions. Notes.
