Abstract:The confusion about the concept of Pan-Africanism has led some observers to conclude that an attempt to define it is impossible. Nevertheless, such an attempt must be made, for it is precisely this confusion that has been responsible for some of the most serious setbacks of the Pan-African movement, while many Pan-African conferences have demonstrated that no serious discussion about the concept can proceed without some agreement on its meaning. The present article therefore restates as clearly as possible the nature and content of Pan-Africanism in the light of historical experience, and suggests its implications for African peoples in their present circumstance.
