Abstract:Excerpts from a copy - obtained indirectly and used without the author's permission - of a paper delivered at a conference of national non-racial sports bodies in South Africa, the Conference of National Sports Organizations held in Durban, September 6, 1970. South Africa's achievement in sports (cricket, rugby, swimming, tennis, golf, etc.) is one to be proud of, except for one thing: South Africa only considers whites for all its sporting events; the overwhelming majority of South Africans are totally ignored. Apartheid in sport has only served to keep that majority lower down the ladder of progress. The whites in South Africa have tried consistently for many decades to ensure that the blacks did not enjoy international competition; they let people play in the different racial compartments because it helped to keep the different races apart. A major problem with which the black sportsman has to contend is, among other things, the lack of suitable facilities. The many problems with which black sport in South Africa has to put up are completely unnecessary.
