| Abstract: | The author examines the unusual and fascinating kinship systems of the Khoikhoi or 'Hottentots' in South Africa and South West Africa/ Namibia. In the last section the Hei-//om of the Etosha region of S.W. Africa/Namibia are treated. Every Khoikhoi is a member of 1. a patrilineal localized clan, and 2. a cross-descent name group. The argument is, in short, that given exogamous patrilineal localized groups and exogamous cross-descent 'great name' groups, the potential exists for Australian-type marriage systems. Sections: The principles of descent - Nama and Kora kinship - A note on the Hei-//om. Ref. |
