Abstract:Survey of the rural development and the settlement schemes in Tanzania shortly before independence and after it. It was after independence that the TANU African Government under president Nyerere began to give a new image to the idea of settlements but this policy was largely disappointing in its results. The period since 1967 has witnessed a radical departure from earlier approaches to economic policy in general and to rural development in particular. The turning point was the Arusha Declaration.
