Abstract:This article discusses the position of the African social scientists working in institutions of learning under governmental control. What should be the role of the man of knowledge and to what extent can he be obedient to the requirements of science when these may call for departures from a given political dogma, as e.g. the idea, which seems to be agreed among most outstanding leaders of new African governments that socialism as a political ideology shows more promise for Africa's development than one calling for and encouraging strong individual competitiveness.
