Abstract:The Gcwi, linked with the Nharô and belonging to the Central Group of Bushmen, are found almost exclusively in the Ghanzi District of Bechuanaland where they inhabit the south-western part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Crown Lands in between the Reserve and the Ghanzi farms. A number them are now settled on the eastern farms where they are intermittently employed as casual labour and herders. As a result of contact with European farmers the Gcwi have broken down into three types: those who now live permanently on the farms and are no longer able to support themselves off the veld dry weather and who, during the rainy season, go out into the desert to hunt and are able to support themselves off the veld while it is green only and are knwon as Borehole Bushmen, and finally those who live permanently in the desert, are able to support themselves off the veld in all weathers, never come into the farms, and are known as Wild Bushmen.
