Abstract:The Mbuti pygmies are hunter-gatherers who inhabit the Ituri forest in the northeast corner of the Republic of Zaire. An important aspect of the Mbuti's relationship with their natural environment is their utilisation of plants for food and for their material culture. This is described in the following sections: Natural environment - Utilisation of plants for foods - The Mbuti's material culture and their plant utilisation (primary tools for manufacturing; strings and ropes; big leaves of Marantaceae herbs; hunting tools and implements; implements for gathering and carrying; dwelling equipment; cooking implements; clothes and ornaments; musical instruments; other miscellaneous items) - Other uses of plants (hunting magic; plants used in play; medicine; tall trees and 'pepepe' shrub) - Discussion.
