Abstract: | This paper explores some relevant passages in the journals of early travellers who saw hunter-gatherer groups in the Kaap Escarpment-Vaal River area. The purpose is to accumulate information that would assist in locating different types of sites and also in interpreting the archeological remains that might be found on those sites. The examination is confined to eye-witness accounts of activity only and not to the general hearsay and speculation that is a feature of many of the early writings on the indigenous inhabitants of South Africa.
