Abstract:In 1974 the Botswana government established a programme of action with the aim of fostering 'greater self-reliance of the Bushmen people'. The present paper examines how far this widely accepted need for self-reliance leading to self-determination for these hunter-gatherers has evolved at a time when the programme is considered well-established and generally successful. The Ghanzi farm San is selected as an example of the strategy adopted to foster self-reliance and self-determination for the Kalahari San, within the socio-political constraints of Botswana today. It represents, however, only one element of what, since 1974, has become a 50-project programme, dealing with all hunter-gatherers and other remote rural poor throughout Botswana. Notes, ref.
