Abstract:This article, which discusses the most specific characteristics of Africa's needs in science and technology, consists of two parts. Part I deals with health services and poses that for a minimum basic level of public health to be maintained there are three requirements: safe drinking water, sewage and waste disposal: sufficient food for human subsistence; and adequate housing. The second part deals with technological innovation, especially in South Africa, where the CSIR was set up as a national research council. Photogr. ref., tab., sum. in Afrikaans.
