Abstract:In reaction to the ideological excesses of bourgeois science, Marxist writers have thrown out much that is empirically accurate, or important to people; and this has been done on quite abstract theoretical grounds. A new synthesis still lies ahead, which loses neither the moral nor theoretical validity of Marxist insights, and accepts the consciousness of people as factual and theoretical givens. The author's contention is that Marxism has protected itself against the onslaught of 'reality' by denying the validity of bourgeois scientific method. Ail the arguments advanced by Marxists that their way of understanding provides true knowledge and right guides to action will remain tenuous and unpersuasive until they elaborate and use an empirical method. Sections: Introductory - The concept of consciousness - The concept of a Marxist methodology - Marxist methodology in African studies - The concept of interest - The need for a Marxist methodology.
