Abstract: | The data on which this article is based result from a three-year (1977-1980) study of the processes of information dissemination to, and its utilization by, policy-makers in the Federal Public Service of Nigeria funded by the National Library of Nigeria. This article first describes a) the degree of federal civil servants' awareness of Federal Government-sponsored research; b) how researchers are selected; c) the specifications of researchers' contracts; d) the monitoring mechanisms employed by the civil servants as research managers; e) the extent to which the research results are used; and f) the preferred formats for the presentation of such research results to policy-makers. In each sub-section the implications for information transfer are highlighted and discussed. The article considers also related issues concerning expatriate-funded research. Notes, ref., sum., tab. |
