Abstract: | This article is an abbreviated version of the introduction to the author's Mbita ya Vutivi; Tsonga Bibliography, 1883-1983 (Johannesburg. 1983). Tsonga is usually spoken of, disparagingly, as a 'minority' language, yet the recently published Mbita Vituvi: Tsonga Bibliography, 1883-1983 contains over 550 titles, proof enough of the vitality and viability of this language, spoken in three neighbouring states of southern Africa. Sections of this article: Early records of Tsonga lexical items; Standardization of Tsonga orthography; Overview of Tsonga publications (the missionary era; 1883-1938; Tsonga publications: 1938-1983; Tsonga publications in Mozambique; Tsonga newspapers); Conclusions. - Notes, tab. |
