Abstract:Few areas in the world display such a bewildering variety of ethnic groups as Ethiopia. Many languages have defied all attempts at classification. Scientific exploration of the country was done by the Frobenius Institute expedition, led by E. Haberland, in 1950-1952 and 1954-1956. To the International Congress of Ethiopian Studies held for the third time in 1966 (for the first time in Addis Ababa) 28 papers more or less related to social research were delivered. Peculiar and unfortunate aspects of Ethiopian research is that it was until recently almost restricted to historical and linguistic studies. Languages probably constitute the most urgent research problem, followed by archaeological research and anthropological research in the field of economics. Many things in Ethiopia are changing at a fast pace. There is an urgent need for further study.
