Abstract:Futures studies are underdeveloped in Africa. Although alternative scenarios now exist for it these have not yet informed policy or planning at national, regional or continental levels. Given Africa's inheritance of dependence and underdevelopment, most trends are not very promising. On the one hand, available forecasts suggest that inequalities within and between African states will increase so that development strategies are likely to diverge. On the other hand, most projections are so pessimistic that the continent might respond by adopting self reliance. To transform its future, Africa may yet experience a period of revolutionary change before the end of this century. Notes, tab.
