Abstract: | Wallace-Johnson had an astonishing success in introducing Marxist ideas and mass-oriented politics to West Africa, and as founder and leader of the West African Youth League he became a major force in colonial politics in English-speaking West Africa, both hated and feared by British Colonial authorities. This article reveals as well the British efforts to suppress Wallace-Johnson's activities in the Gold Coast and Sierra Leone. The sections of part I are: early life - the Gold Coast period: 1933-january 1937 - London: March 1937-april 1938. Part II is concerned with his Sierra Leone period, 1938-1945. Notes. |
